I spent a month with my friends Dave and Deah Riordan at their house in Frigiliana, Spain. Their friend, Tony Smith, was also there at that time, taking a vacation in between semesters at law school. Frigiliana is about 35 miles east of Malaga on the Mediterranean coast. Living in Frigiliana is like living in a postcard. Here is the link to their web site. It describes Frigiliana in more detail
Unlike riding in Denver or Chicago where riding feels like being a deer during deer season. In Spain, the traffic actually stopped and waited for me! The first time it happened, I stopped too because it was my first ride in Spain, everyone had stopped, and I thought well, I should too. Then I understood I was a professional cyclist in Spain, so I waved to everyone and rode on.
I usually rode either north into the mountains, or east along the coastline, but only rarely towards Malaga since there was alot more traffic in that direction. The roads are very smooth, but also very turny and hilly, even right along the coast.
As much as cyclists are almost gods in Spain, sometimes because of the hills, turns and tunnels, the traffic may not always see you, so be careful!
All the people are very friendly and happy. The lifestyle is definitely relaxed and easy going. I arrived during siesta thinking something would be open so I could have lunch. But siesta is siesta and that means everyone stops and takes a break from work.
Until I found the Supersol ( supermarket ) in Nerja, shopping for food was an adventure. Bread from that door down the street, eggs from the farmer, and I am glad I never had to catch my own chicken!
